10 years ago today the physical life of my father John Kane ended. He is gone but never far from my heart and mind. My dad was a role model for me and I hope at least some times that I made him proud. I apologize to anyone I talk to today for anything I might say or do. Please know it isn't you, it just isn't a very good day for me. |

I cannot even begin to describe the incredible friends that I have. When people read about how down I was with Halloween fast approaching I received a number of messages of love and support. Sunniva called to tell me that Thomas was going trick or treating as Batman, Lydia calling to say that if I ended up with no other plans to call them and see about hanging out. Then there are the people from Southern Maryland. The ones who had originally invited Manya and I up to stay and go to the Halloween party up there. They all decided that all we needed to do was get up there and they would cover the travel expenses for both directions. So thank you very much Tom and Jen for your warm hospitality, and a special thank you to Jynette and Erik for deciding that friends were more important then material restraints and that the word can't didn't apply here. Lastly I want to thank Manya for being willing to travel 7 hours because of my love for Halloween and a desire to see some really great friends, and also for practically shoving me out the door Friday night when she decided she wasn't able to make it herself. Without her prodding I would have called and canceled. The party itself was a blast...would go into more detail but hey, what happens in Dun Carraig stays in Dun Carraig. I will post more on the weekend later but really wanted this post to be more about the amazing people I am lucky enough to call my friends. |

With a subject line like that I am sorry this isn't a funnier post. In fact this is your warning to stop reading now if you are expecting funny or silly. The fact is that I just can't sleep. Too much going through my head recently. I am very frustrated by the lack of movement on the job front. I know the economy is bad but I have put in applications at more places then I care to think about and while I have been on an interview here or there, nothing solid as of yet. Any of those people in the Charlotte area who know anyone who is hiring let me know. I am ready to work and really don't care much as to what type of work. It's the kind of cycle that makes it really hard to keep your spirits up. It is also having a financial impact. There are things Manya and I have to miss out on due to finances and it makes me feel bad.
One of if not my favorite holidays is Halloween. I have loved it since I was a kid. For years I have been unable to do much on Halloween because it is usually the weekend of Crown Tourney. I remember the year Halloween was on a Friday night like this year and Kyneburh and I were supposed to be on our way to Crown. We got a late start so kids start showing up for Trick or Treating as it gets dark. Well since we were going to be gone we didn't buy any candy. I broke open a roll of quarters and was giving out quarters to the kids. We became a popular house very fast. Last year Halloween was the week before Crown and we had plans to go to a party. That Saturday Manya was ill and we ended up not making it to the party. This year Crown was on Halloween again so I was resigned to that fact and then Crown got moved. We also received an invite to another party this year. The only problem is that the party is in southern Maryland and now we really can't afford to go. On a rational level I totally understand and agree it is the smart thing to do but it still really sucks.
I am getting to the point where I really don't look forward much to holidays anymore. Many of them have just become a sore spot for one reason or another. Whether it is Halloween and the lack of ability to participate, or my birthday (which while not technically a holiday has the same "celebratory" aspect)which always falls on the weekend of Ymir and often but not always either gets crammed into the event some way or lost in the shuffle. Then there is Thanksgiving(father died), and Christmas which I grew up loving but because of how early all of it starts, how commercialized it has become, and how that has effected how so many of those people I like or care about think of it, it has really tainted it some for me. Who knows, maybe it is all just a sign that I need to grow up....we can't be kids forever.
I am not even sure why I am writing all of this, maybe so that people will have some insight into my current mental state. So if I don't immediately reply to an email, IM, or phone call try to cut my a little slack and know that it is more then likely about me and not about you. Thanks for listening. |

I was sitting and thinking recently and I realized I have lost touch with a number of my friends. I had stopped reading people's journals to keep tabs, and many people have gone to friends only posting. If this is you and you think of me as a friend let me know so I can add you and start keeping up again. I also don't talk to people on the phone as much as I used to. There are really 2 reasons for this. The first is that the charging port on my cell phone died. So now I have to switch batteries every time mine runs down. The 2nd is that the signal in our house is terrible. Half of our house is in digital roam for our cell phone carrier Sprint. Our contract with Sprint is up this month and while they are not a bad company the signal issues are horrible. What cell providers do other people have and do you like your cell phone company and why? Hopefully this will be the first of many new posts....we'll see.
Quick update...I think of many of you as friends too, and while that is always great to hear, I was asking those who have locked friends only diaries to let me know if I should add them to read. Sometimes hard to tell who has a locked diary versus who quit posting. |

I figured this would be as good a thing to start with as any...although many would question the wisdom of starting a diary page before stepping up as king...
